STEP 5: SEND AWAY FOR INFORMATION PACKETS
This last step is simple. You’ve gathered information from a variety of sources and written down the names and addresses of dozens of camps. You’ve achieved the goal of this chapter by making a list. Now it’s time to send an email, a letter, or a postcard to each of those camps to request an information packet. In your correspondence, we suggest that you ask for “information for parents and kids on the upcoming camp season, including all registration materials.” By requesting registration materials now, you’re saving yourself time later.
How many camps should you write to? There’s really no minimum or maximum. Even if you have your heart set on one particular camp, it’s still a good idea to write away for information from your second, third, fourth, and fifth choices. Who knows...maybe your first-choice camp will be full this year. Plus, when you have information from several camps, you can compare the pros and cons of each. Remember, now is not the time to narrow your selection. Write to every camp that looks like a possibility. Families who don’t have a clear first-choice camp should write to at least a dozen different camps. It hardly costs you anything to request the material, and the more data you have, the more informed your choice will be.
