5. Try new things.
This might be your first time at overnight camp, or maybe you’ve been before. Either way, there will be something new to try. There will be new people to meet and play with. There might be some new equipment or new games to try. If the people and things at camp are almost the same as last year, you’ll have some favorite things already picked. Plus, there will always be things you haven’t tried and people you haven’t met.
Some kids think, “I haven’t tried that activity, but I know I won’t like it.” Maybe they’re right or maybe they’re wrong. Maybe they think they won’t like it, but they love it once they try it. You won’t know until you try. Be adventurous! Go out and try new things at camp. It’s one of the best ways to have fun.
6. Be creative.
What could be more fun than trying something new? How about creating something new? Whether you go to a computer camp or a sports camp, you will always have the chance to be creative. Create a new computer game. Create a new soccer play. Create a piece of art to bring home to your family. Create a spooky story to tell your friends around the campfire. Create a new kind of jump off the diving board. At camp, you’ll have lots of chances to be creative. It’s a good feeling to make something new and share it with other people.
7. Set a good example.
The way you act at camp can determine how much fun you have. If you listen and follow directions, you’ll have a great time. You’ll make friends and earn the respect of your cabin leader. Other people will treat you kindly, and that feels good.
On the other hand, if you break rules and goof off all the time, things will be different. It will be hard to make friends. Your cabin leader may take privileges away from you. Other people won’t want to be nice to you if you’re not nice to them, and that feels bad.
Have you ever heard of the “Golden Rule”? The Golden Rule is: Treat other people the way you want them to treat you. If you want other people to be nice to you, then you have to be nice to them. The Golden Rule is true at camp just like anywhere else. Try to set a good example for other people to follow. You will have more fun at camp, and you might also teach other kids how to have more fun.
